Abstract The distributions of fitness on the sites of the one- and two-dimensional lattices are studied for the nearest-neighbour Bak-Sneppen model on self-organized criticality. The distributions show complicated behaviour showing that the system is far from equilibrium. By introducing the “energy”of a site, the entropy flow from the system to its environment is investigated.
