Abstract A new kind of bi-material specimen is employed in an inverted torsion pendulum to study the internal friction in liquids, and especially in materials during liquid-solid or solid-liquid transitions. Vibration systems containing a bi-material specimen with a solid or a liquid inner material can be described by using a modified three-parameter mechanical model. The theoretical results agree well with experimental data.
