Abstract Invariant neutral pion (π0) yields in Au-Au and Cu-Cu collisions and invariant π0cross sections in p-p collisions are studied in the framework of a two-cylinder model. The considered distributions of neutral pions at the maximum energy of the relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) have a tail part in the region of high transverse momentum. A two-component distribution based upon the two-cylinder model is used to describe the experimental data of the PHENIX collaboration.
