Abstract Using the direct soliton perturbation theory, we investigate the evolution of soliton parameters and the first-order correction of bright soliton in a system with linear and nonlinear gain (or loss) and spectral filtering in a comprehensive way. The results obtained by means of our analytic method are consistent with numerical simulations. It is also found that the stable soliton propagation which has been investigated in a previous report by others is the limit case of our results.
