Abstract Point imaging by a photonic crystal slab due to the negative refraction is studied by the finite-difference time-domain method. With a layer metal coating on one termination of a photonic crystal (PC) slab which intensifies the light reflection, one image occurs in the same side with the point source by negative refraction and reflection at the two sides of the photonic crystal slab, which brings about a new kind of imaging for the PC slab.
