Abstract A filter with two zones phase-shifted by π is proposed to improve the axial resolution of confocal microscopes with a finite-sized detector. The optimum axial resolution for a given size of the detector can be achieved by adjusting the zone boundary of the filter. The experimental results are well in agreement with the theoretical predictions.
