Abstract We present the diffraction patterns observed in the gradient-index (GRIN) lens sensor experiment. Then the diffraction pattern of radial GRIN lens is explored by using matrix optics. The theoretical results agree with the experimental results of 27.9-mm-long GRIN lens with 2-mm diameter diffraction patterns.
