Abstract We propose a hybrid optical bistable device based on a fibre Bragg grating. The experimental setup is designed by using real communication components. The optical bistable characteristics are simulated. The feedback nonlinearity and the delay time of the device are emphasized. We discuss the potential of such a device in sensor application.
