Abstract Atomic evolutions in a single atom laser system are studied for different preparations of the initial atomic state and cavity field. Both the analytical and the numerical results are in very good agreement with the experiment carried out by Brune et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76 (1996) 1800], if we choose the same parameters as the experiment. The research justified that the spontaneous emission rates are enhanced in the high-Q cavity.
