Abstract Subpicosecond pulse soliton solutions of the modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation are obtained by applying Hirota's method. It is shown that the accumulation of arrival time jitter due to amplified spontaneous emission in a subpicosecond soliton communication system is less than that for a picosecond one. The former has a greater maximum capacity and so it has greater superiority as an information carrier.
