Abstract The Schrödinger equation of a three-level atom in an electromagnetic wave of circular polarization is established. The solution to this equation shows that under the action of the circular polarized electromagnetic wave, the levels of a Σ-type atom split into nine sublevels, while those of a V-type or Λ-type atom split into six sublevels. By means of some special tuning ways and approximation conditions, the energies of the spilt levels are expressed in simpler forms.
