Abstract The variational method has been applied to investigating the phase diagrams of the two parameter actions containing TrU (P)3 term in SU(2) lattice gauge theory. The result is in agreement with that obtained by Monte Carlo simulations. This can be helpful to understand the mechanism of the phase transitions.
