Abstract We propose an ultra-compact subwavelength cavity resonator that is composed of a bilayer of metamaterials, one with only negative dielectric constant and the other one with only negative permeability. It is shown that the total thickness of the resonator can be much smaller than the resonant wavelength. In addition, this resonator is always single-mode.
