Abstract We investigated the characteristics of argon and helium gas jets produced by a cylindrical nozzle under pressures from 1 to 6 MPa using a femtosecond laser interferometry. A radial parabolic distribution and an axial exponential distribution of the gas jet density profiles are identified. The results show that the density increases linearly with the backing pressure.
