Abstract A new model of cell membranes, a meshwork supported fluid film model, is proposed by unifying the features of the fluid mosaic and the skeleton meshwork. Several properties of cell membranes including cell shape, cell signaling, membrane protein diffusion and endocytosis are discussed from the point of view of this model.
