Abstract The thick targets of Ti, Fe, Ni and Zn have been bombarded with 3 to 7MeV nickel ions. The X-ray spectra of the projectiles and targets showed a significant difference in the intensity of the X-ray radiation for several targets. The explanation of this phenomenon by quasimolecular orbital energy level correlation diagrams and the possible application of Ni ion induced X-ray emission were discussed.
