Abstract We examine theoretically the possibility o f phase separation due to hole aggregation in the background of anti-ferromagnetically ordered CuO2 planes. The results which are calculated within a self-consistent mean-field-type approximation give obvious evidence of phase separation. Our conclusions agree with previous numerical results (from exact diagonalization).
