Abstract The opacity, and its Planck and Rosseland mean values, of the hot and dense Au plasma in local thermodynamics equilibrium are studied by the Monte Carlo method based on unresolved transition array (UTA) approximation. The average ion model and the Saha equation is used to determine the atomic level populations. The result gives a more detailed structure for frequency-dependent opacity than the popularly used super transition array or UTA in the photon energy range of 500 eV to 2000 eV. The Monte Carlo method can give a result better than that of UTA, with almost the same computation effort.
