Abstract It is shown that the semiclassical description of the coherent two-colour photoassociation of a Bose-Einstein condensate can be put into the canonical Hamiltonian formalism. This considerably simplifies the investigation of the corresponding steady states and their quantum fluctuations, and corresponding dynamics.
