Direction-Dependent Switching in Nonlinear Chirped Gratings

Abstract Chirped gratings with uniform Kerr nonlinearity are numerically demonstrated to have direction-dependent switching behavior, which is caused by the different energy storage between the two incident directions. This effect can find useful applications such as optical diode and optical switch-isolator.
