Abstract A microscopic calculation has been carried out based on the random phase approximation (RPA) with deformed Woods-Saxon basis for kπ = 1+ rnode in deformed nuclei. The calculation shows that the orbital part of the magnetic dipole ( Ml ) operator plays a dominant role in exciting M1 (kπ = 1+ ) mode. A fragmentation of the strength in the energy range of 2-4MeV has been found.
