Abstract We present a variational calculation of the mass gap in 2+1 dimensional U(1) lattice gauge theory using a hamiltonian of which the ground state is exactly known. An exponentially decreasing curve for ma us 1/g2 is obtained, but the slope is much larger than that predicted in the periodic Gaussian model.

Abstract
