Abstract The monolayers of a polymer liquid crystal at an air-water interface undergo successive phase transitions caused by conformation changes. In different phases, the polymer liquid crystal Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films are prepared to align liquid crystals homeotropically. The alignment property of the LB films is independent of the conformational changes of aligning agents.
